Golden Hour at Fontainebleau State Park: Stunning Light for Fun Family Portraits
There’s a reason I keep coming back to Fontainebleau State Park in Mandeville for family sessions. When the sun starts to drop behind the live oaks and that Spanish moss catches the light, the whole place turns gold. It’s the kind of glow you can’t fake, and it makes even the most camera-shy family look like the cover of a magazine.
This session was a favorite. Three generations, one giant oak, and a sky doing exactly what I hoped it would.
Why golden hour is worth the timing
Golden hour is that last hour before sunset, when the light goes soft, warm, and flattering on everyone. No harsh shadows, no squinting into the sun, no washed-out faces. Just that dreamy backlight streaming through the moss.
For families, it does something even better than pretty pictures: it relaxes everyone. The light is gentle, the park is quiet, and the pressure melts away. That’s when the real smiles show up, the ones between the posed shots where the kids are giggling and Grandpa’s cracking a joke.
Why Fontainebleau State Park
The Northshore has no shortage of pretty spots, but Fontainebleau is in a league of its own for family portraits. Those sprawling oaks draped in Spanish moss give you a natural frame that feels timeless. The open fields catch the light beautifully, and there’s room for the little ones to run when they need a break from standing still.
It’s also just an easy, laid-back place to be. We can move from the big group shot to the grandkids goofing off on a tree root without missing a beat.
What a session looks like
We keep it simple and fun. I’ll guide you into the light, get the classic everyone-looking-at-the-camera frames early, then let the family loosen up so I can catch the in-between moments. Kids get to be kids. You get portraits that actually look like your family, not stiff strangers in matching outfits.
Earthy, neutral tones photograph gorgeously against the moss and gold, but don’t overthink it. The light does most of the work.
